Reading at a library milk and cookies pajama party. These kids were all so excited because they had been eating cookies all night and sitting in this library after dark I’m pretty sure I could have told them I wrote Harry Potter and they would have gone with it.
Reading with my son to a group of first graders at a library in San Francisco. If you have children of your own I strongly recommend an occupation where you can pack them into a van at the drop of a hat and drastically change the scenery every day or so.
I did an interview for Tank Magazine a little while ago which was great because I got interviewed by a child. If you are thinking of starting a magazine make sure to keep a child handy to make interviews extra special.
This school had a converted church chapel and I stood on stage while all the classes sat in pews. I’ve never been much of a fan of standing on stages. Makes me feel like a cop. To counter this I sat in the tiniest chair I could find and signed books. Look how stoked that kid in the blue shirt is. That’s how I feel when I look at this picture.
On a Sunday between school readings we picked up a date at this massive punk house/squat in Eugene Oregon. We had a vegan pancake breakfast and convinced all these adults and small kids to come and listen to me read. It was amazing because most of the punks were hiding in the kitchen with squatter dreads and face tattoos peering out the doors at the toddlers like it was the weirdest thing that had ever transpired in the entire history of the house. Break down the walls…
I read at a high school in Shreveport, Louisiana . I’d been in the state for all of an hour and a half and I was already on stage, speaking to an auditorium full of kids. Talk about amazing… those were some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. Afterward they took us on a full tour of the school which ended in the principal’s office where they gave me a cake they’d made. Total strangers! Can you believe that?
Before this moment I’d never had a positive experience in, nor associated a positive experience with a principal’s office in my whole life. Thanks for changing that, Louisiana!
I’d just gotten out of a van after being on tour for two weeks, when we rolled up to the at the Children of All Ages show at THIS Gallery. If you are thinking of driving anywhere for long stretches of time I highly recommend packing sidewalk chalk. It can instantly brighten any dull moment.
Daily mail - Awesome Books for 16 different states and 13 different countries… many I’ve never been to. You guys are the best.
Micky Adams is one of the best children’s musicians you’ve never heard. He came with me on the last tour I did and proved to be one hundred percent kid magic. Everyone could use a friend like him.
