I’ve never been left in the night
by a woman boarding a train
or a bus headed out of town
with only the things she could fit into a suitcase.
I’ve never snuck out a window
and shimmied down a trellis
sprinting for sanctuary
in none but my under clothes.
I’ve never come home
to find another man’s coat and tie
flung over the sofa
in passionate disregard.
I’ve never done any of these things
and I wonder
if I’ve ever even been close.
