Your grandpa stands at the crosswalk
holding a yellow sign,
With a message about immigration
for you to take to Washington.
People stare as they pass
and nod.
Not because they support him exactly,
but because he is old,
and they support anyone who is willing to stand out on the block like that
on such a hot day.
Directly across the street
at the opposite traffic light
a high school girl holds a sign
advertising a foot long submarine sandwich for just four dollars.
“What a deal”
Your grandpa thinks
as he hoists his sign above his head
to shade his already pinkening face.
