He decided Tuesday was a good day
to let his child ride on the roof of the car.
It was a holiday for one of the old presidents
so he had off work, and the boy off school
and his wife was still upstate visiting her sister.
“This is something he will get curious about sooner or later”
He told his friend Jeff, who he’d known since college, when he was known as “Big Jeff.”
“I’d rather he do it while I’m around so I can let him know the right and wrong way.”
He boosted the boy just seven years old,
but big for his age,
up onto the roof of his 1998 Toyota Corolla
and circled the cul de sac a few times
getting him used to the feeling of freedom.
Just before setting of down the road
he asked one more time
“You ready?”
“Heck yes!” the boy responded,
with a grin that revealed a mixture of adult teeth, baby teeth, and empty spaces busily progressing.
“Let’s do it!”
His father cranked the stereo.
“Pour Some Sugar On Me”
honked the horn in time,
and peeled off down the block.
Big Jeff pumped his fist in the air
as they turned the corner.
