EAST OF WESTERN
I am in the pool
in my underwear
in the middle of the day
on top of a building
I am visiting for the first time.
A friend is in from out of town.
They have free lemonade here
and towels with hoods on them
that you can wear like a cape
for poolside make believe.
Most of the men and women
in the lounge chairs
are very old
their bodies misshapen, tanned,
and contorted in ways that make
them look like entirely
different animals than me.
Animals that will get me come nightfall.
